It is small as cities go (population perhaps 15,000) and largely Tibetan in character not touched so much by outside Chinese influence. Strategically sited at a junction between Shigatse and Lhasa, it lies along the caravan routes from Sikkim and Bhutan in the south, Gyantse assumed an important role as a military center and market town- particularly for wool and handicrafts. Group joining fix departure tour is available from Kathmandu only and end at Lhasa. The cost I had quoted is very competitive as we use to charge for the same tour US $ 870 per person for others. Being you are students we have consider and facilitate you with this cost. You cannot enter China without visa so you must apply Chinese Individual visa from your country which is not complicated to obtain. In the mean time, if you require any further details or clarifications please do let me know.

I am looking forward to your reply.

With best regards,

Prachanda

P.S.: If you need help for arranging China part as well please let us know, we can also manage it.

Mail 2

Dear Thomas,

Thank you for your prompt reply. Please find the answers for your further questions:

The program did not include Everest Base Camp visit, if you like to add on the tour, it is possible but the cost will be higher than this. The supplement cost for this part will be US $ 110 per person so it means you new tour cost is US $ 885 + US $ 200 = US $ 1085.

The cost US $ 975 is for 1 person not two. If your group size is two only then the cost for 1 person comes US $ 975 but if you could make group more than 2 then the cost comes lower.

I hope you understand and clear on this. Appreciate your early confirmation on this.

With best regards,

Prachanda

Mail 3

Dear Thomas,

Thank you for your kind appreciations. The cost I had offered is my final cost for this tour because I have already & honestly informed you that being you are the students and wish for budget, I had consider my cost otherwise we do not operate the tour with such low margin in private tour.

Yes, our price for train tickets will be higher because we cannot buy the tickets in advance before 10 days for the foreigners as per Government rules so when the time of purchase the tickets almost sold out and cannot be available then we have to turns black market where we can get the tickets but they charge very high than the actual price. So, if you could, you can take this responsibility yourself to get the tickets in reasonable price. We have fought many times with our Tibet partners for this unfair in tickets but they are helpless too.

Anyway, please find the program details and the cost for your requested tour:

Thomas,

I am afraid that travel to Lhasa and the Tibet Autonomous Region is not for budget travelers. Since Tibet has been opened to foreign tourists in the early '80's, it has never been a budget travel destination.

We are based in the city of Xining in the Amdo region of Tibet. We only arrange train tickets to Lhasa beginning in Xining and not from Xi'an or anywhere else in mainland China. If you wish to travel to Lhasa from Xi'an, you will need to contact a travel agency there to assist you.

This is the standard tour we offer from Xining to Lhasa to Everest:

Day 1: Take the train from Xining-Lhasa Day 2: Arrive in Lhasa in the evening Day 3: Lhasa (Jokhang Temple, Barkhor Square) Day 4: Lhasa (Potala Palace, Norbulinka) Day 5: Lhasa-Yamdrok Lake-Gyantse Day 6: Gyantse-Shigatse Day 7: Shigatse-Shegar (New Tingri) Day 8: Shegar-Everest Base Camp-Shegar Day 9: Shegar-Zhangmu (Nepal border)

Prices 1 person: Y8050 2 people: Y4600/per 3 people: Y3460/per 4 people: Y2885/per

In order for me to put you with other people, they will also need to have an Austrian passport. I currently only have around 10 or 12 Austrians planning to go to Lhasa this summer and I don't think any of them are looking for others to join them.

The prices above include train ticket from Xining to Lhasa, all permits, guide, vehicle, driver and all fuel costs.

The prices above do NOT include your meals, accommodation or entrance tickets.

If you have any other questions, please let me know.

Tashi Delek,

Losang
